QR Fleet: EMU
Electric Multiple Unit

In 1979 QR introduced the first electric multiple units into service, on the newly electrified Brisbane railway network.

Utmost consideration was given at the design stage to provide passengers with comfortable, smooth-riding, reliable vehicles. The car bodies were manufactured by the Queensland engineering company Walkers, to an ASEA stainless steel design (since called ABB and now Adtranz) and incorporate glass reinforced plastic decorative front ends. The driver's cab and saloon (passenger) areas are fully air-conditioned with large double glazed tinted windows, to help control the internal temperature during the hot summer months in Queensland.

Soft woollen fabric cantilevered seats, woollen carpet and moulded fluorescent light fittings complete the attractive interior. Access is provided by automatic sliding doors.

The ABB thyristor convertors feed the axle-mounted DC traction motors. The light-weight fabricated bogies, with chevron primary and air bag secondary suspension, isolate the passengers from track undulations.

The success of these train sets was clearly demonstrated by increased patronage, high operating efficiency and the ever expanding electric network which serves the suburbs of Brisbane and much of south-east Queensland.
