QR Fleet: ICE
Inter City Express

QR's introduction of these electric intercity trains in 1988 reduced the travelling times by more than five hours on the route from Brisbane to Rockhampton, a distance of some 600km.

Being an intercity express, the train interior is designed for passenger comfort and includes music and catering facilities. Air conditioning, reclining seats and wool carpeting ensure an impressive interior environment while light-weight, radial self-steered bogies provide a smooth and comfortable ride.

The flexible design allows for various train configurations from four to six cars. Two power pairs can be accompanied by either one or two trailer cars. A power pair consists of two power cars with ABB thyristor drive equipment, one of which includes the driver's cab.

The stainless steel vehicles are based on the suburban trains (EMU's) delivered for the Brisbane Citytrain service. ABB supplied the electrical equipment and the company's local partner, Walkers, manufactured the mechanical parts, partly to ABB's design.

The ICE plied the Brisbane-Rockhampton route until 1998 with the introduction of the Tilt Train. Its primary purpose today is to provide services on the Sunshine Coast line.
