QR Fleet: SMU
Suburban Multiple Unit

QR moves into the 21st century with these recent commuter trains. These trains are used in the Brisbane Suburban Network, and provide Citytrain's customers with a new level of comfort and facilities.

Air conditioning, tinted full height windows, and woollen carpets have been upgraded over and above the levels of comfort previously afforded to commuters by the older EMU trains.

New Passenger Emergency Intercoms provide additional safety to commuters, whilst the Digital Voice Announcement System broadcasts, over the public address system, details of the route and next station.

Train drivers have access to full computerised information about the performance of the train, while the other computers go about their tasks of controlling the new GTO (gate turn-off) thyristor three phase traction converters and three phase electric traction motors.

The stainless steel bodied trains carry on the successful use of this material for QR's existing suburban EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) and ICE (Inter City Express) fleets.

Walkers Limited of Maryborough, Queensland and ABB Transportation Australia combined to produce these vehicles, with ABB Transportation Systems Switzerland being responsible for the computer and traction systems. A number of local Brisbane firms provided equipment for these vehicles.
